Kansas was a wild frontier right up to the turn of the 20th century. But even with all the trouble from Indian wars, “Hell on Wheels” railroad towns, horse thieves, and wild cowboys, the State of Kansas was beginning to settle down by the late 1870s. The Indians were supposed to be safely tucked away on reservations, creating a sense of security for homesteaders and town builders. Then came the Cheyenne outbreak in September of 1878.
