Candidates beat filing deadline for local elections

Thirty-eight candidates met the noon Monday deadline to declare themselves for seats on Ellsworth County city councils, school boards and the Midway Extension District. The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Here are the declared candidates. An “I” indicates incumbents who have filed for the seat.

Cancer fund is there to help

Nearly a year after Glenn Reed’s skin cancer diagnosis, he feels blessed.

An aggressive treatment plan forced Reed to travel back and forth from his home in Holyrood to Salina three times a week. While the treatment was critical, it was coming at a cost. The oneway trip, which was nearly an hour long, was getting expensive.

The Flood of 2019

This road to nowhere is typical of the problems officials at Kanopolis Lake have encountered because of this year’s excessive moisture.

Kanopolis Lake crested late Sunday afternoon at 33 feet above normal; however, predicted rains throughout this week could cause the water to rise again, Dan Hays with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Monday.

With the exception of the Corps-operated Riverside Park below the dam, Kanopolis Reservoir continues to be closed.

Water, water everywhere in area

High water closed Kanopolis Lake this past weekend.

Severe weather and repeated rounds of heavy rain on already saturated ground have caused minor flooding throughout Ellsworth County.

And if the weather forecast holds true, even more rain is expected.

Candidate deadline is June 3

There are still spots on Ellsworth County city and school board ballots in need of candidates. The deadline to file is noon June 3 in the courthouse office of the Ellsworth County election officer. The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Here are the open seats and current holders. “F” indicates those who have filed for re-election.

Future of CP Middle School on June agenda

HOLYROOD — A threehour public hearing May 21 at Central Plains Elementary School in Holyrood, ended with the Central Plains USD 112 board of education delaying a vote on the future of Central Plains Middle School in Bushton until the June 10 regular board meeting at Wilson School.

Board vice president Tony Zink said the added time would allow board members to meet with individual constituents as well as consider the information they received during the public hearing.

Kansas Air National Guard airmen from McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita join Wilson American Legion members in saluting America’s veterans during Monday’s Memorial Day observance in Wilson.

Veterans and their families gathered at cemeteries throughout Ellsworth County and the surrounding area Memorial Day Monday to remember those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country’s freedom.

Memorial Day observances at Ellsworth and Wilson each focused on its history and the reason for the celebration.

Central Plains USD 112 board delays vote on closing the school at Bushton

The Central Plains USD 112 board of education voted Tuesday to delay a vote on closing Central Plains Middle School in Bushton. The decision came during a public hearing at Central Plains Elementary School in Holyrood.
The vote will instead take place at 6 p.m. Monday, June 10 at Wilson School during the regular monthly board meeting.

Caps off to the Class of 2019

Members of the Ellsworth Junior-Senior Class of 2019 listen intently as they are challenged to make a difference in the world. While several of the class are going straight into the workforce, others plan to attend trade schools, community colleges and universities. As a whole the class has accepted in excess of $305,100 in scholarships and awards.

Sydney Wilson, president of the 38 member Ellsworth Junior-Senior High School Class of 2019, set a tone of thanksgiving Sunday, during the annual graduation ceremony in the school gym, as she looked back on the educational journey the class took to reach their special day.

“The constant love and support from our family and the guidance and patience from our teachers has helped us to reach the goals we have set,” Wilson said.“Without you guys pushing us to be our best, we would not be where we are today.”
