Maria Elizabeth Gasper (1946-2019)

Maria Elizabeth Gasper, 72, of Marquette passed away Sunday, June 2, 2019 at Riverview Estates in Marquette, Kan. Maria was born July 28, 1946 in Lindsborg, Kan. to the late William Chester and the late Lillian Maria (Peterson) Brown Sr. She married Alan Gasper Dec. 6, 1975 at Elim Lutheran Church in Marquette.  
Maria was a high school graduate and attended junior college. She worked at Westinghouse Electric in Salina for five years in the 1970s.  Maria was then hired by Kenneth Heinrich at Midwest Sewing and Vacuum, where she worked in sales and teaching sewing classes, from 1990 to 1998. It was at that time that she partnered to have her own store. She owned and operated The Emporium Inc. in Salina, selling Brother sewing machines, from 1998 until her retirement in 2007.

Sewing lessons offered

The Marquette Senior Center has been hosting a day for sewing and visiting on every other Wednesday. All adults are welcome. We have had a lot of fun. Check the center for the days.

Area Happenings

Animal clinic is June 8

The 2019 Marquette Vaccination and Dog Registration Clinic will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 8, in the Marquette gymnasium entryway. Services will be provided by veterinarian Becky Dillon. Fees are: Dogs — $8 for rabies, $18 for DHLPP, $11 for heart-worm check and $15 for bordetella. Cats — $8 for rabies, $11 for FVRCP and $14 for feleuk.

Mary Elizabeth Olson (1926-2019)

Mary Elizabeth Olson, 92, of Marquette, Kan., passed away Sunday, May 26 at Riverview Estates in Marquette.
Mary was born in Enid, Okla. July 1, 1926, daughter of the late Lena (Marlowe) and Herman  Moore.
She worked as a photo developer at Smile A Minute, and was an avid bowler and golfer. She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Salina, and later became a member of Elim Lutheran Church in Marquette. Mary sang for the Bethany College Handel’s Messiah for over 50 years. She also sang in the church choir and in the Salina Chorale for many years.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Vernon; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her siblings, Jack, Marlowe, and Julia Moore, and Maggie Blenis; and great-nephew, Kenneth Dean Olson.
Visitation will be Tuesday, June 4 from 1 to 7 p.m. at Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home, 500 S. Ohio Street, Salina, with the family present from 5 to 7 pm.

Evelyn Lea Ourada (1941-2019)

Evelyn Lea Ourada, 78, Marquette, passed away May 28, 2019 in Marquette, Kan. She was born Jan. 27, 1941 in Los Angeles, Calif., the daughter of Anton and Jessie (Beeson) Ourada.
Evelyn is preceded in death by a son, Jon Hansen.
She is survived by 5 sons, Les Perryman, ‘B.A.’ and (‘Ze’) Perryman, Donald (Penny) Farris, Anton (Robbin) Farris, George Hansen; a daughter, Laura Bradley, and many grand and great-grandchildren.
Private services will be held by the family.

New fire station needed, local firefighters say

Firefighters say Marquette needs a new fire station and they’re hoping taxpayers of McPherson County Rural Fire District 2 will agree.

Birth

Cole and Brenda Rawson announce the birth of their son, Ryan Cole.

He was born April 6 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Kan. He weighed 7 pounds and was 20.5 inches long.

His siblings are Presley, 9, and Easton, 7.

Paternal grandparents are Bill and Louise Rawson of Marquette, and maternal grandparents Jeff and Lisa Britts of Peoria, Ariz.

Council approves pool charge to water bills

The Marquette Swimming Pool will begin the 2019 season Sunday, May 26, and with the opening will come reduced admission rates until June 1, when a swimming pool fee will be placed on city water bills.

Homeless man raises concerns

During the public input portion of the May 14 meeting of the Marquette City Council, resident Dennis Swisher asked something be done about the homeless man wandering around Marquette. One of Swisher’s elderly neighbors has had the man beating on her windows and she is afraid, he said.
