Indiana born Eli Titus was 24 when he arrived on lush grasslands of the Caney River valley in 1870. Before coming to Kansas, Titus had attended Lombard College at Galesburg, Ill., where he received a business education that would serve him well throughout his lifetime. In 1863, with the American Civil War raging, 17 year old Eli Titus enlisted in company C of the 137th Illinois Infantry.
