Caring for and conserving the soil has always been job one for longtime Ellsworth farmer Alan Pflughoeft. “Even though I don’t have anybody to directly hand it down to, I want my land to be in better shape when I’m gone than when I started,” Pflughoeft said in a recent interview with the I-R. “The way I look at it is probably the same way the native Indians looked at it — the land isn’t something that somebody really owns — it’s one of God’s possessions and I’m a caretaker of it.”
