As a youth development agent for K-State Research and Extension, at times I feel that I have been tasked with an impossible mission — to “develop tomorrow’s leaders” — one of five grand challenges that the university has tasked extension faculty with. The work we do with youth through 4-H programming seeks to increase a child’s confidence, competence, character, ability to care and connect. In turn, we hope those that we reach will then contribute to our communities in positive ways later in life.
