CENTRAL PLAINS SWEEPS 2A ST. JOHN-HUDSON SUB-STATE TOURNAMENT — WHOLE TOWN STATE-BOUND II

 

ST. JOHN — The top-ranked and undefeated 2A Oilers defeated

their arch-rivals and defending 2A champions, the fourth-ranked Tigers of St. John-Hudson, 48-26, in a game worthy of a State title game Saturday at St. John.

 

It was be the fourth meeting of the teams this season, with Oilers handing St. John-Hudson its only four losses of an 18-4 season. It was an outstanding game of high school boys’ basketball.

 

The win gives the Oilers the top seed in the 2A Sate boys’ basketball tournament March 9-12 at Bramlage Coliseum on the campus of Kansas State University in Manhattan.  

 

The top-ranked, undefeated and two-time defending champion 2A Lady Oilers of Central Plains stunned the eighth-ranked Lady Timberwolves of South Centra,l 60-28, Saturday in the championship match at St. John.

 

The Lady Timberwolves are a good basketball team, but the basketball machine known as the Lady Oilers forced the entire fourth quarter to be played with a running clock.

 

It will be the Lady O’s third consecutive appearance in the Big Dance in Manhattan.


 

PALCO —  The Lady Mustangs of Sylvan-Lucas Unified defeated the Lady Dragons, 58-44, Saturday in the championship match of the 1A Division II sub-State tournament in Palco.

 

The Mustangs defeated Palco 51-39 in the boys’ championship match.

 

It is the first time in the history of Sylvan-Lucas Unified that both basketball teams have won a trip to State n the same season.

 

The 1A Division II sub-State tournament will be played March 9-12 at United Wireless Arena in Dodge City.

NORTON — The Lady Monarchs of Thomas Moore Prep whipped Beloit 60-48 Saturday in the 3A sub-State tournament in Norton.

 

Top-seeded and seventh-ranked Norton beat fifth-ranked Thomas Moore Prep 62-50 in the boys’ championship match Saturday in Norton.

 

The 3A State basketball tournaments will be played March 9-12 at the Sports Arena, on the campus of Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson.
