More than 100 turkey vultures have claimed the trees in the draw behind Leon and Debbie Jacobs’ home on Blake Street in Ellsworth as a summer roosting area. The vultures, which are considered a protected species, spend their days at the water tower near the old Ellsworth County Hospital. They return to the Jacobs’ backyard at about 7 p.m. or a little later. Debbie Jacobs recently attended a meeting of the Ellsworth City Council to gather support for her plan to have the vultures relocated by a wildlife specialist from Kansas State University.
