By the spring of 1865 the American Civil War was finally coming to an end. Following Gen. Lee’s surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox, April 9, 1865, the remaining armies of the Confederacy laid down their arms over a period of 11 weeks. The last Confederate general in the field, Gen. Stand Watie, signed a cease-fire with Union representatives at Fort Towson, June 23, 1865. Stand Watie’s name became legend among faithful Confederate supporters.
