The First Cavalry spent the winter of 1858-59 at Fort Riley after a hard riding summer on the California-Oregon Trail. Upon arrival, Captain Lambert Bowman Wolf recorded in his diary, “Since we started last March we have traveled over 2,300 miles and feel almost like ourselves and horse were one animal.” The winter certainly changed that.
