Ellsworth County Proclamation Supporting Radon Action Month

PROCLAMATION

SUPPORTING RADON ACTION MONTH

WHEREAS, radon is a colorless, odorless, naturally occurring radioactive gas that threatens the health of our citizens; and
WHEREAS, the Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. It is the number one cause among non-smokers; and
WHEREAS, 57% of all Radon Test conducted in Ellsworth County has an elevated radon level; and Ellsworth County currently has the highest recorded Radon Reading in the State of Kansas.
WHEREAS, any home in Ellsworth County may have an elevated level of radon, even if other homes in the same neighborhood do not; and
WHEREAS, testing for radon is simple and inexpensive; and
WHEREAS, identified radon problems can be fixed; and
WHEREAS, The Saline County Environmental Services, and Kansas State University Extension Office are supporting efforts to encourage residents to test their homes, mitigate elevated levels of radon.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the month of January 2017 is hereby designated as Radon Action Month in Ellsworth County
