Rush’s family lives the history of Ellsworth County

By LINDA MOWERY-DENNING

Darlene Rush carries the history of generations of her family. From the stories she heard from her mother and other relatives, the early years of Ellsworth County’s settlement are almost as real to her as the paintings and old newspaper clippings she has as reminders of that earlier time.

“I think it was a neat time, but I’m not sure I’d want to go back there and live,” Rush said.

Rush and her husband, Kermit, live in a tidy ranch-style home in east Ellsworth. Her great-grandfather, Robert Bruce Hudson, left his native Scotland for Canada when he was 16 years old. In 1859, he traveled to near Manhattan and later, in 1866, took up farming along Thompson Creek in Ellsworth County.
