Sentimental Journey

It was a step of faith in a world wrecked by war and uncertainty.

He had completed 50 bombing missions over Europe as the waist gunner and later an upper turret gunner in a B-17. He was stationed at Boeing Field in Seattle, awaiting possible reassignment to the Pacific and B-29’s.

Living through one tour of duty in Europe meant you beat the odds. Another tour, with the possibility of bombing Japan itself, might be stretching his luck.
