Happy Birthday, Ellsworth

Ellsworth reached its peak as a Kansas cattletown in 1873. That year — six years after being laid out — the town saw about 220,000 cattle pass through on the way to slaughterhouses. The boom brought dollars to the area — much of it revenue from the operation of saloons, gambling houses and brothels.

It wasn’t an accident Ellsworth came to be known as the “Wickedest Cattletown in Kansas.”

Starting today (Thursday), Ellsworth celebrates that past and the 150 years of progress since with four days of activities.
