Oilers chalk up Homecoming victory
CLAFLIN — Last Friday, the Central Plains Oilers football team battled against the Otis-Bison Cougars in a Homecoming struggle at the CPHS football field in Claflin.
Although Otis-Bison is ranked No. 3 in Kpreps 8-Man Division 2, the O-Men did not disappoint the homecoming crowd, earning a 36-12 victory over the Cougars.
Oilers coach Chris Steiner thought his team played well.
“We did what we wanted to do defensively,” he said. “On offense, we stuck to our game plan and were successful.”
The Oilers are looking to retain the winning advantage on their home turf after suffering a home loss to Victoria two weeks ago.
Just two minutes into the game, Otis-Bison earned the first six points with a 24-yard off tackle run by senior Blake Bahr. The point after touchdown failed.
The Oiler offense stalled in the first quarter, failing to find the end zone. However, the Oilers found their stride just one minute into the second quarter when senior Anthony Oberle ran a sweep right for a nine yard touchdown. Again the point after touchdown failed to go through the uprights.
The first half ended in a tie at six.
Oiler offensive momentum cranked up just two minutes into the second half. The Oilers would add to their score with a 48-yard touchdown run by junior Alex Hickel, gaining Central Plains their first lead of the night.
Junior quarterback Devin Rice would make a connection to senior Kade Beck to extend the lead by two extra points. Hickel’s dive into the end zone just over four minutes later would move the score to 20-6.
Otis-Bison would rally back with less than a minute left in the third quarter. Bahr would once again score, this time from a 49-yard sweep to the right. The Cougars point after touchdown attempt would fail, rounding up their score to 12.
The Oilers would not let the Courgar’s end of the third quarter dive affect them. With 9:33 left in the game, Hickel would pound out 14 yards for another six points. The point after touchdown run, also by Hickel, was successful.
The final score came seven minutes later when Ryan would keep the ball for a three-yard touchdown run. Sophomore Jerred Bieberle added the point after touchdown for the O-Men.
For the Oilers, senior Dalton Beck would lead in tackles, with six assisted and six unassisted. Both teams rushing yards were comparable, with the Oilers leading with 299 yards to the Cougars 212 yards.
The next action for the Oilers football team is a 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, game against the Kinsley Coyotes at Kinsley.
