Joyce Adams Reynolds (1928-2017)

Joyce Adams Reynolds was called to Heaven, Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017 at Alamance Regional Medical Center after suffering a fall and subsequent broken leg. In addition, progressive dementia had taken the short term memory from this once sharp, amazingly intelligent woman.

Mrs. Reynolds was born Joyce Adams Dec. 5, 1928 in Danville, Va. to the late John and Nettie Adams. She was the third of four children born of this union. She married Harold “Whitey” Reynolds in Danville July 1, 1950.  They welcomed a son, Mark Anthony, May 10, 1951, and then a daughter, Carol Allison on July 22, 1963. She lived her life in Danville until April 2017 when she and her husband relocated to Brookdale Assisted Living in Burlington, N.C.,  and then just four weeks ago she moved to The Cottages at Blakey Hall in Elon, N.C.

After working 44 years in the Inspection Room at Dan River Mills, she retired, only to begin a second job that she enjoyed immensely until the age of 80 as a “demo girl” in various grocery stores in Danville. Through doing these product “demo’s” she was able to see those she hadn’t seen in years, and make many new, and lasting friendships. In addition, Joyce faithfully attended Timberlake Baptist Church for 18 years until her health started to decline and she could no longer attend formal worship services.

Joyce will always be remembered for her nurturing and humble spirit, her precious smile, her fabulous cooking, her cozy home of which she took immense pride, and her immeasurable love for her family and all who were blessed to have been her friend. Joyce was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, but most importantly, a child of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the love of her life of nearly 67 years — her husband Harold B. “Whitey” Reynolds, who made his ascension into Heaven three months ago on June 19; her loving son, Mark Anthony Reynolds on May 1, 2007; her sister and best friend, Norma Davis; and her brother, Irving Adams.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Reynolds Wynn (Mike) of Cedar Grove, N.C.; grandchildren, Ryan Woods of Mebane, N.C., Emilee Woods of Durham, N.C., and Ashley Reynolds Barta (Jim Barta) of Hutchinson, Kan.; her only great-grandson, Lucas Barta of Manhattan, Kan.; and sister Carolyn Page (David) of Greensboro, N.C.

The family would like to thank the compassionate staff of The Cottage at Blakey Hall and Alamance Regional Medical Center, for they so lovingly cared for her in the last days of her life.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 27, at Highland Burial Park (North Main side), Danville, Va., with the Rev. Ken Tilley officiating, and many family members speaking fondly of memories with Joyce.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Disabled American Veterans.   Swicegood-Barker Funeral Home, Danville, Va. assisted the family.
