Dr. John N. Flanders (1929-2017)
A Celebration of Life service for Dr. John N. Flanders, age 88, of Cookeville, Tenn., will be at 2 p.m. Saturday Jan. 6 at Cookeville First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Charles McCaskey officiating.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:30 until service time at the church.
Dr. Flanders passed away suddenly Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017 at his home.
He was born July 25, 1929 in Wichita, Kan. He was the son of Mary Elizabeth Nourse Flanders.
Raised in Ellsworth, Kan. on a wheat farm, he received his bachelor’s degree in geology from Kansas State University and then worked as a oil exploration geologist for Atlantic Richfield. He later pursued his masters and doctorate degrees in psychology from Florida State University. Following graduate school, he served as the Director of Admissions at Young Harris College in Georgia. He moved to Cookeville where he served as Professor of Psychology and as the Director of Counseling and Health Services at Tennessee Tech University.
Dr. Flanders was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. He was a Boy Scout Troop leader for several years, and member of Cookeville First Presbyterian Church.
His kindness, patience, intelligence and subtle humor will always be remembered.
He is survived by his wife, Annette Coorts Flanders; four sons, Alan Flanders of Portland, Ore., Rob (Colleen) Flanders of Cookeville, David (Jennifer) Coorts of Louisville, Ky., and Charles (Joanne) Coorts of Nashville; daughter, Cynthia (David) Boles of Cookeville; eight grandchildren, Erin Flanders, Devin Flanders, Chelsea Coorts, Chrissy Coorts, Jack Coorts, Hannah Elizabeth Boles, Levi Pretric, and Emilee Pretric.
Pallbearers will be friends and family.
