Dorothy Thomas turning 90 years

Dorothy Thomas is celebrating her 90th birthday Feb. 9. She was born Feb. 9, 1928, in the now-abandoned Ellsworth Hospital, the daughter of August and Louise (Barkow) Bettenbrock.

She attended Yingst Country School, District 18 and walked 1 1/2 miles to school except when her Dad was going that way in the muledrawn lumber wagon. She grew up with three brothers, Jack, Robert, and Donald “Buck” Bettenbrock. All three are deceased.

Dorothy graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1946. She attended K-State University and graduated in 1950 with a degree in Dietetics and Institutional Management. She completed her dietetic internship at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and worked at Bethany Hospital in Kansas City, Kan. for 15 1/2 years as Chief Dietitian.

On June 20, 1971, she married Robert C. Thomas of Brockton, Mass. at the Methodist Church in Brookville. The couple lived in Teaneck, N.J. until moving back to Ellsworth in 1976. Robert died in 1994.
