Kathryn 'Anne' Breckenridge McGhee Grothusen (1927-2018)

Kathryn 'Anne' Breckenridge McGhee Grothusen, 91, of Ellsworth, Kan. passed away March 7 at Alma Manor in Alma, Kan., after a brief bout of pneumonia. She was surrounded by her sons.

Anne was born Feb. 4, 1927 in Woodston, Kan. to Cecil and Gladys Breckenridge. Anne married Charles McGhee while they were college students at KSU. Their union was blessed with three sons, Charles Michael, Patrick Allan and David Richard. After college, Anne was a public school teacher until 1970 and then a counselor at KSU.

She later married Lloyd Grothusen in 1973 and moved to Ellsworth, Kan. During her marriage to Lloyd, she enjoyed being a farmer and rancher’s wife, a counselor for St. Francis Boys’ Home and travelling. She was active in the community and served on the board of OCCK, was a municipal judge for Ellsworth and also served on the board of the hospital committee that built the Ellsworth County Medical Center. In her free time, she was active in the Republican party, enjoyed time with family, travelling and playing bridge.  

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, her son David, and her brothers and sisters.

She is survived by sons, Mike (Valerie) McGhee, Patrick (Tammy) McGhee, John (Elaine) Grothusen; daughters, Ann Grothusen (George) Jones, Jane Grothusen Moore and Chris Grothusen Klinger;13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.  

Her Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at the First Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth.  

Memorial contributions can be made to the Ellsworth County Medical Center Auxiliary and the First Presbyterian Church of Ellsworth.

Cremation services were handled by Angels Above Cremation Services of Topeka, Kan.
