Alan Byerley undergoes surgery in Salina

Local business owner Alan Byerley is recovering from surgery Thursday at Salina Regional Health Center.  Byerley was taken to Salina Tuesday, following an accident at Ellsworth Junior/Senior High School. The loader he was operating tipped over, pinning him underneath until Ellsworth firefighters were able to free him.

Murray Marston, Ellsworth County Sheriff, shared the information with attendees of this morning’s breakfast at the First Presbyterian Church, part of the day’s activities for the National Day of Prayer. Marston visited Byerley at the hospital yesterday.

Marston said part of Byerley’s right leg was amputated and further efforts continue to prevent infection. Marston spoke to Byerley for a few minutes and brought a message back from Byerley. “He said to just go back and tell everybody he’s glad to be alive, because it was pretty close,” said Marston.

As of 10:14 a.m. this morning, Byerley was listed in serious condition, according to hospital spokesman John Berggren. He said no additional details were available, due to privacy laws.
