Bob and Rose Small to celebrate 65th wedding anniversary

Bob and Rose Small will celebrate 65 years of marriage Nov. 15.

Bob and the former Rose Doubrava were united in marriage Nov. 15, 1953 in the Smoky Hill Air Force Base Chapel where Bob was stationed with the 40th Air Refueling Squadron in Salina, Kan.

Bob's basic training was at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas and his schooling for Aircraft Mechanics was at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas. He then went to Smoky Hill Air Force Base, serving as a mechanic on B-29 aircraft until they were obsolete. He then was transferred to 40th ARS Refueling Squadron as a crew chief on KC-97 aircraft where he spent his four-year enlistment and was discharged at Smoky Hill Air Force Base in 1956. He had served TDY in England, Newfoundland, French Morocco, Norway, Iceland and California. After his discharge, he worked for O'Shea and Rogers Ford dealership in Lincoln, Neb. The couple then moved to Holyrood where he worked for Standard Implement and Construction Company and Holyrood Motor Company. Bob worked for Northern Natural Gas Company, UPG in Palestine, Texas, HTI, Northern Gas Products in Bushton and Enron subsidiaries. He retired after serving 33 years.

Rose was employed at the Saline County Courthouse in Salina until Bob's discharge. Rose then worked for various employers, Standard Implement and Construction Company, Farmers Mutual Insurance Company, Warner's Jack and Jill both in Holyrood. Upon moving to Palestine, Texas, she worked for J.C. Penney's and Texas Employment Commission. After transferring to Liberal, Kan., Rose worked for Amoco Production Company. After Bob's next transfer to the Lyons, Kan. area, she worked for Kansas Power and Light where she retired in 1991.

The couple has resided in Lyons for 38 years. They have two sons, Keith and Nancy Small of Lyons, Jim Small of Bakersfield, Calif., and are blessed with six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
