Dale Grothusen to celebrate 100th birthday

Dale Grothusen, of Salina and formerly of Ellsworth, will celebrate his 100th birthday with a reception from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Brookdale Salina Fairdale, 2251 E. Crawford. Dale was born Dec. 17, 1918, in rural Ellsworth County.

On June 30, 1945, he married Dorothy Neuschafer, in Seattle, after he returned from service in World War II. He had completed 51 missions in Europe on the crew of B-17 bombers with the U.S. Army Air Force.

The Grothusens lived near Ellsworth for 70 years, operating a wheat and cattle business. Dale especially enjoyed projects in his machine shop. Dale served as an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth. The Grothusens are long-time polka dancing and big band enthusiasts.

Their children are Marsha, of Dallas, Ruth, of Eugene, Ore., and Bill, of Phoenix.
