And down the school came

(Editors Note: The following tells a story by Fred Peterson who was the Marquette city clerk for 17 1/2 years. He said he has been carrying the events of this day with him for 30 years and thought it was time to share them.)

On June 8, 1986, Geneva Peterson, Fred Peterson’s mother, wrote in her diary, “Fred almost got killed.” And now for the rest of the story.

It was a Saturday morning and I arrived at the north end of the Marquette High School building and climbed the fire escape to enter the third story. In the past weeks, people had been allowed to remove items from the building before it was torn down. Craig Larson and Troy Johnson were in the building looking at a few remaining items they were going to remove. I remembered that the math (chemistry) room on the southeast corner had slate blackboards which I wanted for the front of the Range School Museum.
