Summer Rains

Mother Nature, in the form of rain and hail, has forced the 2016 wheat harvest to a sputtering halt in Ellsworth County. Hot, muggy days have recently translated into almost daily late afternoon summer squalls, dropping rain and some hail on the ripened crop and forcing the harvest to a standstill in some parts of the county. “Well, the 2016 wheat harvest looked promising for a long time in the Wilson area,” said Alan Brokes, who farms just south of Wilson. “However, June 17 we suffered a fair amount of hail damage — about 40 percent — over about two-thirds of our acreage.”
