     Paul M. Young, age 100, died on Wednesday July 20, 2016 at the Via Christi Hospital, Manhattan, Kan.
He was born on Feb. 13, 1916 in Seaman, Ohio the son of Clarence P. and Jessie Lee (McClure) Young.  Paul graduated from Seaman High School with the class of 1933.  He earned his A.B with Honors in Mathematics from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio in 1937 and later his M.A. and Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Ohio State University in 1941. In 1942, he was commissioned into the United States Naval Reserves and instructed at the Naval Reserve Midshipmen’s School and served as a navigator on the USS Hamblen during WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1946 at the rank of Lieutenant.
His career began as an instructor of mathematics at Miami University in 1941, followed by appointment of Associate Professor and later Professor of mathematics at Kansas State University. where he was also the acting dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1957–1959.  He was then the Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Arkansas from 1962–1966. Paul returned to Kansas State University and was the Vice President of University Development from 1970–1980. He retired in 1985 as a Professor of Mathematics.  During his career he was a member of many Honorary Societies, most notably Phi Beta Kappa.
Following his retirement, he remained active on the Board of Trustees at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community from 1985 until 1994 and was the president of the board from 1989 until 1994.  He was on the Board of Directors of the Central Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City, Kan. for many years and was a life member of the Manhattan Rotary Club. Paul also was a very active member of the First Baptist Church, Manhattan, serving on many church boards and committees. He later became a member of the First Congregational Church in 2003.  
Paul had many interests away from his professional career, including photography, painting, completing sudoko puzzles and growing flowers, especially roses and iris.  He was well known for having a very analytical and logical mind and a sometimes cutting sense of humor.
He was united in marriage to Edna Schroeder on Dec. 5, 1942 in Lorraine, Kan. This union was blessed with two children: Robert and Margaret.  Edna preceded him in death on March 9, 1994. He was later married to Elnora T. Huyck on Sept. 15, 2001 in Prairie Village, Kan. She preceded him in death on May 5, 2009.  His only brother, James L Young, preceded him in death in 1989.
 Survivors include his son, Robert Young, and wife, Glenda, of Shawnee, Kan.; daughter, Margaret Baechtold, and her husband, Ted, of Solsberry, Ind.; and two grandsons, Paul Baechtold and Caleb Baechtold. He is also survived by other family members and many friends.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday July 25, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, Kan., with Rev. A. David Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.
