Friends and Enemies

The name Wild Bill Hickok was already widely known by the time he arrived at Fort Riley early in 1866. Harpers New Monthly Magazine catapulted him to stardom in their February 1867 issue. Hickok made many friends throughout his celebrated life but he also made plenty of enemies. David McCanles contributed to the legend with an enmity freely given at Rock Creek Station in 1861. He also gave his life in a hair-raising shootout with Wild Bill.
