Ellsworth captures track gold at home

The Bearcats girls’ and boys’ track teams had the opportunity to compete in front of a hometown crowd this past week during the annual Ellsworth Invitational.

In only the third track meet of the season, Ellsworth had several strong performances, including a first-place finish on the boys’ team from Josiah Bolton in 1600-meter run.

RUSSELL — The Ellsworth High School track and field teams kicked off the 2019 season on the road during the Russell Invitational on Friday at Shaffer Field.

Other high school teams competing in the meet were Russell, Hutchinson-Trinity Catholic, Plainville and Thomas More Prep-Marian. Plainville won the girls’ and boys’ team titles.

Ellsworth’s Oberle is first

Bearcat Joey Oberle placed first in No. 1 singles April 2 at the Ellsworth High School Varsity Invitational Tennis Tournament.

As a team, the ‘Cats placed second with 54 points behind Central Plains.

Lady ‘Cats claw Ellis

ELLIS — The Ellsworth Lady ‘Cats defeated Ellis 12-0 Tuesday, March 26 in softball action, as pitchers Brenna Pruitt and Lizzy Hipp combined for a shutout.

In the first inning, the Bearcats scored three runs on a Jaide Talbott single.

Ellsworth sweeps tennis meet

RUSSELL — Ellsworth swept its first varsity tennis tournament of the season March 28, scoring 50 points to take first place at the Russell varsity tennis meet.

The tournament has traditionally served as a battleground for Ellsworth and Central Plains, determining which team will come out ahead. But this year, a new team emerged to claim second place. Colby finished just behind Ellsworth, with only two points separating first and second places at this year’s tournament.

Bearcats earn double win against Beloit

BELOIT — After suffering tough losses against Ellis earlier in the week, the Ellsworth Bearcats redeemed themselves Thursday, March 28, by defeating Beloit in a baseball doubleheader on the road.

Beloit got things going early, scoring four runs in the first inning. Soon, Ellsworth answered back, scoring four runs in the fourth inning.

Ellsworth Bearcat North Central Activities Association All-League players for 2018-19 are: from left Bransen Schulte, honorable mention; Jaide Talbott, honorable mention; Avery Haxton, honorable mention and Laykin Tenbrink, 1st Team.

More than a dozen student basketball players have been named to All-League teams for the 2018-19 school year. Central Plains, which captured double state championships earlier this month, fielded the most players. The Oilers play in the Central Prairie League.

Boys

First team — Brett Liebl, senior guard; Alex Hickel, senior guard; and Devin Ryan, senior guard. Second team — Myles Menges, senior forward.

Girls

First team — Emily Ryan, junior guard. Second team — Avery Hurley, senior guard; Rachel Lamatsch, junior guard; and Delaney Rugan, junior guard.
