Rick Davis starts his day early. 4:30 a.m., in fact. In those quiet hours before sunrise, Davis is preparing for a day lasting at least 18 hours.

It’s 6 on Friday morning, and Davis is already at work at Ellsworth Steakhouse, the restaurant he owns with his wife, Tina. It’s still an hour before the doors open as he readies for the breakfast crowd, and then lunch.

Pass attack versus the run game: only one style could prevail in Friday’s Class 2A, District 8 battle in Hoisington. In the end, the Cardinals rolled more than 400 yards on the ground and scored on runs of 24, 57, 73, and 90 yards to take down Ellsworth 48-14.

Cardinal junior Wyatt Pedigo missed week one of the season with an injury but has proved to be one of the state’s top rushers since. After the Bearcats turned the ball over on downs to open the game, Pedigo ran the first Hoisington play from scrimmage 57 yards for the first touchdown of the night.
