THE GOLDEN RULE

Pope’s message gives us hope for a better United States

Hundreds of thousands of people flooded into Philadelphia Sunday to witness the final public appearance of Pope Francis during his 10-day trip to the United States and Cuba. It was the same everywhere he went, it seemed. Hundreds and thousands waiting for just a glimpse of the man who came here to tell us what we already know and don’t practice nearly enough — embrace the Golden Rule and treat others as you would have them treat you. During a sermon to lawmakers in Washington, D.C., the Pope challenged Congress and voters alike to serve the needy and to see the world in nuance rather than the “simplistic reductionism which sees only good or evil.”

IT’S ABOUT ALL OF US

By Linda Mowery-Denning

There are far too many instances where people can’t see two sides of an issue until it affects them directly. They are firmly opposed to gun control until a random act of gun violence kills a family member. Only then does the idea of background checks and gun registration start to make sense.

Throw the dice and pray

By Donald Kaul

The stock market is down. It must be some crazy thing China has done. Those Communist countries just don’t understand how capitalism works. No, wait! The market just went up. Did China fix its capital markets already? Not really. More likely it’s that our Federal Reserve has hinted that it’s not going to raise interest rates any time soon because a bunch of economists are afraid of deflation.

Stop hot air about debt

by Lee Hamilton

A couple of months ago, the Congressional Budget Office issued a sobering report on the U.S. economy’s longterm prospects. Not to put too fine a point on it, we’re headed for the fiscal rocks. Federal spending accounts for about 20 percent of the nation’s GDP, the budget analysts note; if current trends continue, that will rise to fully 25 percent by 2040. Revenues will not keep up — they’ll amount to only 19 percent of GDP.

Purpose of I-R’s new website is to complement the newspaper

Technology has become so embedded in our lives we tend not to think about it — until someone posts a dumb comment on Facebook about us or issues a provocative Tweet that captures our attention. We did not have a website when the Ellsworth County Independent published its first edition in 1999. We’ve now been through at least four and we’re still counting. Our most recent effort went live Monday morning. At www.indyrepnews.com, you will find short summaries of city council meetings, football games and other events as soon as they happen. We also will focus more on breaking news. The beauty of a website for a weekly newspaper has always been its ability to give us immediate access to our readers. At the same time, we believe our product has value and should not be given away. If you’re interested in details, see the subscription form on Page B1 of this week’s I-R.

The Kickapoo Prophet

In our modern American society we tend to think of prophets as righteous messengers set in the Middle East bringing the word of God to a wayward people. Prophets, however, are not limited to the Judeo-Christian culture. Prophets can be found
