Do-nothing Congress

By Lee Hamilton

I had the good fortune last week to spend some time in Washington, D.C. with about a dozen former members of Congress. As you’d expect, we got to talking about the current Congress. Very quickly it turned out that the same question was troubling all of us: Why is it held in such low public esteem?

OPPORTUNITIES

Every so often, someone comes along who makes so much sense you have to share their thoughts with others. That was the case a week or so ago when Brent Comstock spoke at Wilson to area high school students. At 20, Comstock is a veteran entrepreneur, someone who saw a business niche in his small community in Nebraska and figured out a way to fill it. Comstock was 12 years old when he started a computer business in sparsely populated Auburn and eventually turned it into a digital marketing company with a global footprint and 15 full-time developers and designers.

These are only a few of the services that are available to Ellsworth County residents.

ELECTION FUN

by Linda Mowery-Denning

Editor/Publisher

Ellsworth County voters have a busy summer ahead of them if they want to be prepared for the local primary election in August and the general election in November. There’s all kinds of things happening at the federal and state levels. Hillary. The Donald. It should be quite a show. In Kansas, Gov. Sam Brownback isn’t on the ballot, but every House and Senate seat in the Kansas Legislature is up for grabs. Will the voters of Kansas support incumbent Republicans out of habit or will they finally realize that just because a candidate has an “R” after his name, it doesn’t mean he or she knows how to govern?

May is for Mental Health

BY PAT KINNAIRD

May is Mental Health Month — recognized across the United States as an opportunity to spread the word that mental health is something everyone should care about. SAMHSA, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, reports that one in four adults experience a mental health problem in any one year. For children the numbers are one in five. Central Kansas Mental Health Center, Ellsworth County’s community mental health center, is recognizing May Is Mental Health Month by sharing information about the number of services available to all Ellsworth residents.

KIDS AS ADULTS

It’s sad for our state when a third-grade student demonstrates more maturity than many of the adults in Topeka. In case you missed it, here’s the story, as reported by KWCH in Wichita: Victoria superintendent David Ottley tweeted two photos Friday, after a third-grade girl gave him an envelope with money inside. The envelope said, “Our school needs this money more than I do! I’m giving it to you for new books and activities.”
