Blowin’ in the Wind

Aproposed wind farm planned for southern Ellsworth County remains in its infancy as developers gather the authorizations necessary to proceed.

A year ago, about 50 Ellsworth County landowners gathered in the J.H. Robbins Memorial Library basement to hear more about the proposal. At the time, Krista Mann, senior business development manager for Invenergy, a Chicago-based developer, told residents there was a 50 percent chance construction on the wind farm could begin within the next two years.

Active shooter exercise delivers dose of reality

Being Prepared

It’s an unthinkable scenario everyone prays will never happen in their town: An active assailant enters a local school with a gun and starts hunting for teachers and students.

The reaction of teachers to such a nightmare situation was the focus of a training exercise Monday during a teacher in-service at Ellsworth Junior-Senior High, Kanopolis Middle and Ellsworth Elementary schools.

Strike Up the Band

Editor’s Note — After more years than just about anyone can remember, the Ellsworth Junior/Senior High School band has new uniforms. Students modeled them at the most recent board meeting of the Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo School District. They also were on display as the drumline performed at a recent basketball game. Here’s the story the I-R’s Jennifer McDaniel wrote about the effort to secure the new uniforms.

On most crisp, fall mornings across Kansas, there’s the unmistakable thump of the bass drum, signaling high school marching band practice.

But listen carefully, and there’s the sharp staccato of the snare drums, along with the tenors and quads, punctuating the beat. The longer practice goes on, the further these sounds carry throughout these small towns, giving locals a sneak preview of what they’ll hear on Friday night.

Stuck in the Mud

It’s been a hard winter for local ranchers like Terry Kueser. Cold temperatures, wet weather and mud. Lots of thick, sticky mud hamper Terry’s efforts to feed the commercial cattle herd he manages with his son, John, near Ellsworth.

“It’s been terribly hard,” Kueser said.“It’s been so damp.”

After months of dry, droughtlike conditions, moisture returned to the area this past summer and throughout the latter parts of 2018, replenishing farm ponds and pastures. But the precipitation the area needed for so long refuses to let up, challenging even the most experienced cattlemen.
