Dump Week starts April 8

Yes. It’s spring. A time of renewal and rebirth. It’s also that time of year when homeowners — including those in the city of Ellsworth — give their homes a good, thorough spring cleaning, and that often means clearing the clutter that’s built up over time.

But while wading through those precious treasures, the idea of how to get rid of them seems a little daunting.

Color us Grey

It’s been a long, cold winter colored by grey, overcast days broken up by fleeting moments of sunshine.

With winter days waning, most people are already over it, and have been for a while now. But at least in the short-term, it doesn’t appear Ellsworth will be warming up anytime soon.

Corrections officer Hunter Defenbaugh sometimes works overnight shifts lasting 16 hours.

‘I don’t want to be poor all my life’

Hunter Defenbaugh loves working in prison.

Five nights a week, the 19-year-old corrections officer works overnight shifts in the infirmary at El Dorado Correctional Facility 30 miles northeast of Wichita. He checks on sick inmates, gives them blankets, calls nurses for help.

Defenbaugh likes the job, he says, because he likes helping people. It beats his old gigs flipping burgers at McDonald’s or ringing up customers at Walmart.

Wilson FFA members Ethan Dlabal, left, and Mason Prester display the hydroponic lettuce they started growing in January at Wilson School. The lettuce will be used in USD 112 school meals.

From Farm to School
