Remembering Our Fallen

CARNEIRO — Following the seven-gun salute and playing of Taps, the solemn tone at Carneiro cemetery gently eased into fellowship. About half of the 40 people attending the Memorial Day service broke into small groups to converse. Jon and Wanda Sneath were among the last to leave.

They live on the south edge of Carneiro, north of Alum Creek, and know many that attend every year. Many of their relatives are buried here. Jon served as a C-130 transport pilot during the Vietnam War. He reflected on the address given by Pastor Luke Brown, who said the holiday “should not be merely a break, a time to get to the lake or the barbecue, or to enjoy a long weekend — but a time to renew our sense of deep gratitude for those who have served their country.”

Tom’s Ranch House opens in Marquette

Tom French, the owner and manager of Tom’s Ranch House at 109 N. Washington in downtown Marquette, purchased the Ranch House and opened Friday, May 18. The bar serves burgers and chips, as well as beer.

“We are finalizing our long term licences and are working hard to get everything organized. We should be open this weekend and intend to be open with consistent hours after that. As soon as we get everything in place we will post our new hours,” says French.

Free meal program is planned

Children and teenagers in Ellsworth, Wilson and other area communities will have a place to go for lunch this summer — thanks to a volunteer program supported by local churches and others with a stake in the well being of Ellsworth County’s younger residents. Lunches in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program will be provided for children and teenagers, ages 18 and younger, regardless of background, religion or race. Participants will notice a difference this summer in the three-year-old Ellsworth program.

For the first time, volunteers will serve a hot lunch, prepared at Wilson by organizers of the free lunch program there. In the past, Ellsworth has served cold, packaged food from the Kansas Food Bank. Volunteers hope the hot food will attract more children. Lunches will be served from 11:30 a.m. to noon May 29-Aug. 3 in the basement meeting room of the J.H. Robbins Memorial Library.

Ellsworth seniors celebrate graduation milestone

Ellsworth’s teachers and staff bid goodbye to their former students at Sunday’s graduation ceremony, with live music marking the opening of the ceremony and accompanying the new graduates as they exited the gymnasium. Guests and the Class of 2018, composed of 21 seniors, were welcomed by Jaxson Windholz, senior class president. Windholz was later joined by his three classmates, Jeanae Brungardt, Kolby Davis and Riann Pruitt, to give the senior address. The quartet took turns drawing attention to the many shared firsts, as well as last instances they would experience.

It is crazy to think that we are finally receiving our diplomas and parting ways,” said one. “Would you believe that it has been 15 years since we first sat in Mrs. Haase’s Precious Pals Preschool?” asked another.

WILSON — The dozen members of the Wilson High School Class of 2018 were reminded of the ties that forever bind them and the new challenges that await them during graduation ceremonies Saturday in the school gymnasium.

“Fellow graduates, we did it,” said Kendyl Zorn, class valedictorian. “One of the milestones we will accomplish in our lives is now complete. We all worked hard to reach this day.”

Zorn said the Wilson High School Class of 2018 have a bond forged from years of friendship and shared experiences.

Cancer survivor to share story

When Janell Cunningham was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of 2015, there was at least one element in her favor: time. Although she had a mammogram that October, it was her own self-exam a month later that suggested a problem.

Early detection is one topic Cunningham expects to mention when she speaks at the Ellsworth County Cancer Fund’s annual fundraiser event. This year’s triathlon, at Ellsworth Junior/Senior High School on June 8, is composed of team fundraising, laps around the track and a game competition. It’s been dubbed “Lock Up Cancer.

Hearing set for Kanopolis feedlot

In about two weeks, the public will have an opportunity to comment on an expansion request by 4S Feeders, a cattle feeding business in Kanopolis.

The public hearing is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at the J.H. Robbins Memorial Library.

On paper, the purpose of the expansion is clear: to almost double the acreage for pens, storage and waste treatment.

Lions Club holds disc golf tourney

The Marquette Lions Club disc golf tournament was held after a weather delay on Saturday, May 5.

Winner of the first place championship flight was Roger Kraatz, Kanopolis with a score of 57.

Second place championship flight winner was Ian Johnson, Lindsborg, with a score of 60.
