The Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo USD 327 board of education moved one step closer to a proposed $1.45 million project to construct a new multi-purpose cafeteria/flex room at Ellsworth Elementary School and make other improvements.

The board, meeting July 5, approved Resolution 18-12, which allows the district to enter into a lease-purchase agreement for $1.45 million to provide financing for the improvements with Piper Jaffray & Company of Leawood, Kan. acting as the placement agent for negotiations.

As Ellsworth County farmers headed for the harvest fields earlier this summer, Josh Svaty had more on his plate than wheat.

The night before, the Democratic candidate for Kansas governor had been at the El Dorado Civic Center for a debate. Next up was Washunga Days in Council Grove, followed by appearances at Kansas City, Osage County, Wellington ... the campaign season was in full swing.

Members of the Marquette swimming classes and their teachers met for their second day of class Tuesday, July 3, at the Marquette city pool. A second class will be offered beginning July 16. Above are the 10 a.m. classes and below are the 11 a.m. classes. Names of class members will be published in the next issue of the Tribune.

Even as a young girl, Ellen Russell remembers how Kanopolis residents would flock to the American Legion Hall to try their luck during the annual bingo tournament her mother and other local women hosted each November.

In those days, the women, all members of a local social club, packed in the crowd by offering an evening of food and fellowship in exchange for donations they used to make improvements throughout the community.

Supporters of a splash pad in Preisker Park gathered Friday in the kind of weather Ellsworth’s new water feature is supposed to help remedy.

With the temperature at more than 100 degrees and the area under a heat advisory, members of the local Kiwanis Club broke ground for the splash pad, which has been months in the making.

After a series of three executive sessions to discuss non-elected personnel Monday, Ellsworth County commissioners demoted Ellsworth County EMS director Rod Rees to paramedic, effective immediately. Rees has served as director since Oct. 1, 2011.

Ellsworth County EMS advanced emergency medical technician Jeremiah Brown was named director by commissioners.

On Tuesday, June 12, the wheat field north of the Mid-Kansas Coop in Marquette was being cut. The hot, dry weather was great for harvesting, but not so good for yields.

At the time of this publication Dorothy Remley just celebrated her 106th birthday and is considered to possibly be the oldest living resident in Ellsworth County.

She was born Dorothy Louise Grothusen Sept. 12, 1911 in an old stone house just southwest of the Ellsworth Cemetery to William and Christine Strella Grothusen whose families had immigrated from Czechoslovakia. Dorothy grew up in a loving home with four brothers Ralph, Lloyd, Dale and Jack, all hardworking and successful farmers in the area.
