Ellsworth County tennis teams to State

HILLSBORO — Ellsworth’s number one doubles team of Parrish Blanding and Joey Oberle placed fifth at the tough Hillsboro 3A-2A-1A regional tournament to advance to the 3A-2A-1A State tournament Friday and Saturday in Garden City.

Only the top six singles and doubles team qualify to play at the State tournament.

Lady Oilers take fifth at Hoisington

HOISINGTON — The Lady Oilers track team tied with Pratt-Skyline for fifth place with a total of 64 team points April 25 at the Hoisington Invitational meet in Hoisington. A small Lady Bearcat squad placed seventh with six. Hoisington won the meet out of eight teams with 135.

Ellsworth did not bring its full varsity squads to the meet as the teams were preparing for the tough April 28 Beloit Relays. It was an overcast day as the meet began with a cold northern wind blowing over the track and field. Temperatures plummeted as the meet progressed.

Davis sweeps sprints at Beloit Relays

BELOIT — Ellsworth’s Kaden Davis won the sprint trifecta Friday at the huge Beloit Relays, winning the 3A-4A 100-meter dash with a time of 10.98; the 200-meter with a time of 22.59 and 400-meter with a time of 50.75.

Ellsworth’s Jacob Kerby placed third in the 3A-4A shot put with a 45’7.5” throw.

For Wilson, Angel Hilario placed fifth in the 1A-2A 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.15 and Kyle Goldwater placed sixth in 1A-2A high jump with a height of 6’2”.

Goldwater places second at Wilson Invitational

RUSSELL — Dragon Kyle Goldwater placed second following an exciting jump-off in the high jump event, April 18 at the 58th annual Wilson Invitational meet in Russell.

Goldwater competed against defending 1A champion 6’7” Dave Dubbert, who won the event with a leap of 6’4”. Goldwater had a personal best leap of 6’3.75” to take the silver medal.

Lady ‘Cats notch second team track win

STERLING — The Lady ‘Cat track team chalked up another win April 20, grabbing 122 points at the Sterling Invitational track meet at Sterling College. Sterling placed second out of 10 teams with 106.

Natalie Soukup continues to dominate the throwing circles with a 37’10.5” win in the shot put and a toss of 115’ for second place in the discus. Kolby Davis won the long jump with a distance of 15’7” and placed second in the high jump with a score of 5’2”. Paige Talbott won the grueling 800-meter run with a time of 2:35.0 and teammate Devin Julian placed second with a time of 2:43.52. The Ellsworth 4X800-meter relay team won with a time of 10:46.05.

‘Cats take third

RUSSELL — Ellsworth senior Kaden Davis repeated his sweep of sprint titles April 11 at the Ellsworth Invitational track meet, winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.99; the 200-meter with a time of 22.08 (breaking his last week’s previous EHS school record) and 400-meter with a time of 50.0. It was a rare pristine Kansas spring day. Temperatures were in the mid-70s with just a breath of a breeze. Both the track and field were in excellent condition.

Lady ‘Cats are 5-1 for the season

MINNEAPOLIS — The Lady Bearcat softball team swept the April 13 double-header in Minneapolis with a 19-4 victory in the opener and a 6-5 win in the nightcap. Ellsworth grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning and added four runs for a 7-0 lead by the bottom of the third. The Lady ‘Cats had a big third inning, scoring eight runs and holding the Lady Lions to one. Ellsworth scored four runs in the top of the fifth for a commanding 19-1 lead. The Lady Lion’s rally ended with three runs in the bottom of the inning, giving the Lady ‘Cats the 15-run lead needed to call the game at the send of the stanza.

Goldwater takes second place

BENNINGTON — The Wilson Dragons placed seventh out of 12 teams with 29 points Friday at the Bennington Invitational meet. Bennington won the meet with a total of 108 points.

It was a perfect day with temperatures in the low 80s and a slight (for Kansas) 10-15 m.p.h. breeze.

Lady ‘Cats win track meet

RUSSELL — The Lady Bearcat track team won the tough Russell Invitational, scoring 68 points out of nine teams April 6 in Russell. The Lady Greenbacks of Pratt, a 4A school, placed second with 67.33 points.

It’s unknown when the Lady ‘Cat track team last won a track meet, but it’s a good bet it has more than a decade.

Oilers track at La Crosse

LA CROSSE — The Lady Oilers track team placed third March 30 with a total of 59 team points at the fifth annual La Crosse Invitational meet in La Crosse. Ellis, with 138 points, won the meet out of eight teams.

It was a cool and windy day but sunshine kept the track dry as the athletes competed. It was the first season Central Plains has competed at the relatively new meet. The Oilers formerly opened the track season at the Kinsley Invitational.
