Bearcats place second at Winter Jam

GREAT BEND — The Hoisington Cardinals defeated Ellsworth, 63-51, Saturday in the championship game of the Cardinal Winter Jam at the Activity Center in Hoisington. Hoisington scored seven points in the first quarter and held the ‘Cats to five. The Cardinals put 16 points through the hoop in the second stanza, while Ellsworth scored 10 for a 23-15 halftime score.

‘Cats take second at Cardinal Winter Jam

HOISINGTON — The Ellsworth Bearcats placed second Saturday at the Cardinal Winter Jam, suffering a 63-51 loss to top-ranked 1A Division I Otis-Bison.

The Lady ‘Cats placed third, defeating LaCrosse 48-36.

Northern Plains League tournament

LINCOLN — The ninth-ranked 1A Division II Wilson Dragons placed fifth in the tough Northern Plains tournament with a 46-42 win over a good Pike Valley squad in Lincoln.

The Lady Dragons blitzed Lincoln, 52-21, Saturday to win fifth place.

Mid-Winter Classic tournament

ST. JOHN — The Central Plains Oilers placed fourth in the Mid-Winter Classic tournament, suffering a 52-45 loss to 4A Division II Pratt in the third place game.

Wednesday’s tournament hoops wrap-up

LINCOLN — Fifth-ranked 1A Division I Osborne pulled away in the third quarter to defeat the ninth-ranked 1A Division II Wilson Dragons 50-34 in the second round of the Northern Plains tournament.

The Dragons will play Lakeside in the consolation semi-finals at about 4:30 p.m. Friday, at the grade school in Lincoln.

The Lady Knights of Lakeside also took over in the third quarter to beat the Lady Dragons 50-34.

The Lady Dragons will meet Natoma at 3 p.m. Friday, at the grade school in Lincoln.

HOISINGTON — The Bearcats will play Minneapolis at 4:45 p.m. Friday, at the Activity Center in Hoisington. Minneapolis is a better team than its record implies and upset LaCrosse in the opening round.

The Lady ‘Cats will play a quality Russell club at 3 p.m. Friday, at the Activity Center in Hoisington. The previous meeting of the two NCAA teams was a heart-stopper.

Tuesday’s tales from the hardwood

HOISINGTON — The Bearcats defeated a much improved Russell team 78-68, Tuesday in the first round of the Cardinal Winter Jam in Hoisington. The Broncos played a good first half of basketball, but Sam Keener, Jackson Connally and the balance of the ‘Cats grabbed the lead in the third quarter and battled until the final minute for the win.

The Lady ‘Cats defeated the scrappy six-girl Victoria club 54-19. Lady ‘Cat fans got a glimpse of the future as head coach Ken Cravens played every girl on the squad during the contest. The future looks bright.

LINCOLN — The ninth-ranked 1A Division II Wilson Dragons will meet fifth-ranked 1A Division I Osborne at about 4:30 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the grade school in Lincoln.

Friday’s roundball roundup

SALINA — The seventh-ranked Knights of Sacred Heart defeated the Ellsworth Bearcats 75-57 in Salina.

The Lady ‘Cats defeated the Lady Knights 44-36.

VICTORIA — The undefeated, three-time defending champion 2A Central Plains Lady Oilers beat the Lady Knights 87-9 in Victoria.

The Oilers destroyed the Knights 74-17 in the boys’ game.

LINCOLN — The Lady Dragons continue to improve as a basketball team and defeated Tescott 63-45 in the first round of the Northern Plains League tournament in Lincoln.

The Wilson Dragons dominated a young Thunder Ridge club and cruised to a 56-34 win in the boys’ game.

Mid-Winter basketball tournament updates

HOISINGTON — The Ellsworth Bearcats and Lady Bearcats will compete Jan. 16-21 in the annual Hoisington Winter Jam.

The Lady ‘Cats, with a 7-1 record, are seeded second and will met a struggling Victoria squad at about 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan 16 at the Activity Center in Hoisington.

Fifth-ranked 1A Division II Otis-Bison is the top seed.

The Bearcats (6-2) are also seeded second and will meet a 1-7 Bronco club at 8:15 p.m. Monday, Jan 16 at the Activity Center in Hoisington.

Top-ranked 1A Division II Otis-Bison is the number one seed.

LINCOLN — Wilson will compete in the huge annual Northern Plains League tournament Jan. 13-21 in Lincoln. The NPL encompasses 14 schools and 26 ball teams with four Kansas Basketball Coaches’ Association ranked teams competing on the girls’ side and five ranked teams on the boys’.

Lady ‘Cats are 7-1

BELOIT — The Lady Bearcats defeated Beloit in a close game, 42-40, Saturday in a make-up North Central Activities Association league match-up in Beloit. The game had originally been scheduled to be played Dec. 16, but was rescheduled due to weather.
