Ron and Barb Davis reach milestone anniversary

PFC Ronald Le Roy and Barbara Jean (Andrews) Davis of Ellsworth, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 27.

The couple were married in 1967 at the United Methodist Church on Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan.

Two major topics hit the table Monday night during the regular meeting of the Ellsworth City Council.

The proposed 2018 budget was accepted and another $9.3 million in capital projects was presented to council members by city administrator Scott Moore.

The council approved the proposed budget for 2018 in the amount of $9,977,200. That translates into a 75.936 mill levy or a .13 percent increase over the current fiscal year.

Nellie May Worl

Christopher and Jill Worl, Geneseo, announce the birth of their daughter, Nellie May Worl. She was born at 11:29 a.m. Friday, June 30, 2017. Nellie weighed 7 lbs, 3 ounces, and was 21.25 inches long.
Nellie was welcomed home by big sister, Sadie, age 1.
Maternal grandparents are Ernie and Lisa Jezek of Holyrood.
Paternal grandparents are Ted Worl of Geneseo and Tonya Worl of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Charlie Sharp reaching milestone

Charlie Sharp, Ellsworth, is celebrating 100 years Sept. 6.
Come celebrate with him at an open house from 2-5 p.m. Saturday Sept. 2, at the Hoeger Chapel, Good Samaritan Society, Ellsworth Village.
Charlie was born in West Virginia Sept. 6, 1917 to a large family and served in the U.S. Army for many years. He moved to Ellsworth from Topeka a few years ago and enjoys the community very much.
Family celebrating with Charlie are daughters, Marvin and (Barbara) Register, Jefferson City, Mo. and Dan and (Lorie) Taylor, Wilson; grandsons ,Chuck and Susie Register, Jefferson City, Mo., Rick and Melissa Register, Columbia, Mo., Tim and Melissa Taylor, Ellsworth; granddaughter Nicki Taylor-Morris, Concordia; great-grandchildren, Alex Register, Lauren Register, Andre Lising, Olin Register, Javon Rice, Dylan Morris and Abigail Taylor.

When your child starts school

Child number three is about to embark on another first — he is headed to preschool in a few weeks. While I have had two others head off to school before him, and he has been in daycare since he was 8 weeks old, there are some things I need to keep in mind as he begins his school journey.

Whether it is your first child, your third, or falls somewhere else on the spectrum, here are important reminders for any parent sending a child off to school for the first time.

Barton instructor named KDOC Contract Employee of the Year

Barton welding instructor Allan Collins, who works with inmates at Ellsworth Correctional Facility (ECF) via the Building Academic Skills In Correctional Settings (BASICS) program, was named the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) Outstanding Contract Employee of the Year for the Ellsworth facility. He received a certificate and shook Gov. Sam Brownback’s hand at the Capitol Building in Topeka.
