P.Y.W. FCE

The P.Y.W. Family and Community Education Unit met Thursday, Feb. 16, at the home of Betty Jo Lloyd.

The president announced the Northwest Area Spring Business Meeting will be April 25 at Colby.

Donations were approved for the Wilson After-Prom, Russell County Free Fair and the Dorrance Easter Egg Hunt.

Warden Martin J. Sauers of the Ellsworth Correctional Facility announces the Outstanding Employees of the Third Quarter for Fiscal year 2017. They were honored by Gov. Sam Brownback at a reception at the State Capitol on Feb. 13. A ceremony was held Friday, Feb.17 at ECF with family members and professional colleagues in attendance:

Jonathan E. Dewey, Outstanding Uniformed Employee of the Quarter, began his career with the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) at ECF Sept. 12, 2011, as a Corrections Officer IA.

Traveling 12 Card Club The Traveling 12 Card Club met at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Czech Apartments with Doris Oller as hostess.

Winning Hi was Vera Ehrlich, Lo was Dorothy Brokes and getting traveling was Myrene Soukup.

Others playing Pinochle were Jeannie Thrasher, Betty Heinze, Jan Zamernick, Alice Peterka, Julia Woodmansee, Gale Paterson, Lucille Janda and Charlene Stoppel.

Steve and Vickie Haun of Wilson, Kan. are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Randi Dawn Haun, to Jacob Paul Hardman, son of Jed and Paula Kuhn of Great Bend.

Ms. Haun, a graduate of Fort Hays State University in 2007 and Wichita State University in 2009, is a Physician Assistant in orthopedic surgery in Overland Park, Kan.

Fire consumes 1,000 acres

About 1,000 acres were burned and two farmsteads threatened by a grass fire, the cause of which remained unknown Monday.

Rice County firefighters were called at about 3:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, to a blaze along 14th Road and Avenue S headed to the south.

Express feelings without blaming others

When we are upset with our children, resentful of our spouse, or angry with a co-worker conflict can reach an elevated level. Often when in conflict, we communicate using words that blame and attack. These messages may begin with the word “you.”

For example, “Bill, why didn’t you get done what I asked you to get done today? You were given a simple task and couldn’t get it done. What is wrong with you?”

Lessons can be hard

‘Learning by Doing’ is the motto of 4-H. Often the most impactful lessons are the hardest to learn. Preparing young people for challenges and learning experiences (often called failures) reminds me of the following story and I share it as a good reminder of life-lessons and how we react to those lessons.
