Kanopolis resident 'mines' $10,000 lottery win

When Patrick Kyler won $40 on a $20 instant scratch ticket last week, his brother was philosophical about it.

“He told me ‘I guess if you want to win big, you gotta play big,’” said Kyler. The 51-year-old Kanopolis resident said his brother was referring to the $20 price of the ticket. Perhaps because of that comment, his brother was the first person Kyler called when he quite unexpectedly scratched off a $10,000 prize over the weekend.

Soukup-Stevenson Engagement

Olivia Soukup and Trent Stevenson, both of Russell, are proud to announce their engagement.

The bride-elect's parents are Jean Soukup and Rick and Deanna Soukup, all of Ellsworth.

The groom-to-be's parents are Roxanne Stevenson, Ellsworth and the late Michael Stevenson, who lived at Wilson.

The bride-elect is a 2011 graduate of Ellsworth High School, and a 2015 graduate of Fort Hays State University where she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Marketing. She is the co-manager at Glik’s in Hays.

The future bridegroom is a 2009 graduate of Ellsworth High School and a 2011 graduate of Pratt Community College where he earned an Associate of Applied Science degree. He is a power lineman for the City of Russell.

A Sept. 9 wedding is planned at the Collingwood Barn in Pretty Prairie.

Ammon Ward Hanslovan

Jordan and Andrea (Shaw) Hanslovan, Cheyenne, Wyo., announce the birth Jan. 25, 2017 of their son, Ammon Ward Hanslovan. He was born at the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center.

Welcoming Ammon home is big brother Agustus.

Maternal grandparents are Mark and Doris Shaw.

Paternal grandparents are Jeff and Cheryl Hanslovan and Kelly and Todd Bond.

Maternal great-grandparents are Abraham and Pauline Holzmeister and Malcolm Shaw

Paternal great-grandparents are Ward and Norma Hanslovan and Verla Carr.

George Bezemek to celebrate 90th

George Bezemek is celebrating his 90th birthday. He was born July 23, 1927, in southwest Ellsworth County and resides on the family farm homesteaded by his grandfather.

After graduating from Lorraine High School, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the 2nd Armored Division.

He is known for his love of car racing. In the early 60s and 70s, he built and raced his own car — No. 68 — competing at racing meets around the state. He is retired after 40-plus years as a mechanic.

His family is requesting a card shower in his honor. Cards may be sent to 1585 11th Rd., Ellsworth, Ks. 67439.

Class of 1957

The Class of 1957 had its 60th class reunion May 26 and 27. Fifteen class members were present for a meal at Pretty Boy Floyd’s underground restaurant Friday night. Seven spouses and one former coach and teacher, Pep Shanelec, were also present.

A good time was had by all and many memories were shared. There was a lot of other catching up about family, retirement, work, and gladness for health. All were happy to still be alive and a few plan to make it to age 100.

Class of 1947

Nine members of the Ellsworth High School Class of 1947 gathered May 27 to celebrate their 70th anniversary. A lot of good memories were shared and reminiscing about the good ole days made the afternoon a memorable one. Classmates attending were: Loren Paull, Kanopolis; Eleanor Bach, Manhattan; Don Bush, Emporia; Barbara Steiner, Great Bend; Ruth Hulse, Erna Haase, Lorene Barta, Ruth Burgenger and Pauline Zvolanek, all of Ellsworth.
