Directors of the Ellsworth Childcare and Learning Center have a question and they’re asking for help in arriving at an answer: “How can the center become solvent without creating additional burdens on center families and the community?”

That is the focus of a community meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the childcare center.

The center, which opened in 2012, serves 49 families and 75 children in Ellsworth, Rice, Lincoln and Saline counties. It has 26 employees.

A National Day of Mourning to honor President George H.W. Bush has been set for Wednesday, Dec. 5. Since the post office will be closed, newspapers won't be mailed until Thursday, which will result in later delivery to your home.

Papers will still be available as normal at vendor locations, racks and in-office pickup. The I-R will be open as normal.

Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus are all set to make a special trip to Marquette Dec. 1 to open Miracle on Washington Street. They will appear at the Fine Arts Center from 2-3:30 p.m. to visit with the good little boys and girls.

Food is always abundant at most festivals and Miracle on Washington Street is no exception. Cookies will be for sale by the Starlight Club in the Fine Arts Center. The Marquette Senior Center will be open from 4:30 to 7 p.m. serving chili, dessert, coffee and tea for a free will donation.

Tami McGreevy’s heart fills with happiness when someone who has benefitted from the Christmas Store returns a few years later — not as a recipient — but as a volunteer. Or makes a donation to help continue the program that has helped deliver Christmas to Ellsworth County children for 18 years.

For McGreevy, such experiences prove the store’s mission of “giving a hand up, not a hand out.”

“It’s really special when that happens,” she said.

The program, which purchases holiday gifts for children whose parents can’t otherwise afford them, helped about 30 kids in Ellsworth its first year. In 2017, the number had grown to 208 and spread across Ellsworth County.

Jane Coyne smiled as she unknowingly peeled away the speckled shell of the boiled quail egg and shoved it into her mouth.

Throughout the dinner, her longtime friend, Khanh Nguyen, had urged her to try the Vietnamese delicacy. So eventually, Jane gave in. In South Vietnam, duck and quail eggs, also known as Balut or Trung vit Lon, are a popular snack or appetizer. But unlike the boiled chicken eggs eaten in the United States, these include a partially developed chick, feathers included, inside.

The Marquette children’s ministry, S.L.A.M. J.A.M., presented military veterans of the Marquette American Legion with Thank You Banners and goodie bags on Saturday Nov. 10.

Nearly eight months after the state was forced to take over a Wilson skilled nursing facility — one of 15 Kansas nursing homes owned by an insolvent New Jersey-based company — the doors are still open.

And while the state was able to step in to provide uninterrupted care, questions still remain as to any long-term solution for these nursing facilities.

Downtown Ellsworth’s third annual Jingle & Mingle will only consume two hours; however, those two hours will be filled with enough holiday cheer to carry visitors of all ages through the season.

This year’s celebration will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, with activities inside downtown businesses and on the street. The event is sponsored by the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce.

Public concerns continued to be voiced at the Nov. 13 meeting of the Ellsworth City Council in the wake of an angry exchange between Ellsworth businessman Shannon Mog and City Administrator Scott Moore at the council’s Oct. 22 meeting.

“I can’t speak for everyone, but I can speak on the facts, because we know that the facts don’t lie,” Moore’s wife, Tammy, said. “That’s what we are taught with our principles and morals.”
