It’s simple safety — Lock your doors

Whether it’s an unlocked vehicle or residence, without a barrier, there’s nothing preventing thieves from taking whatever they can get their hands on and fleeing into the night.

To a criminal, those fleeting seconds spent committing a burglary are valuable bits of time. But to a victim, that same span of time has more costly effects.

Small town life suits new ECMC chief executive

Excited. That’s the word Andrew Bair, Ellsworth County Medical Center’s new chief executive officer, used to describe his feelings about Ellsworth and ECMC.

“One of the things that excites me is just Ellsworth itself,” he said during a recent interview with the Independent-Reporter.

Teacher contracts include modest increases in base pay

The Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo USD 327 and the Central Plains USD 112 boards of education recently approved negotiated agreements with their teachers for the 2018-19 school year that include modest increases to their base salaries.

“We did a good package last year, but we weren’t quite able to do as good a package this year,” said Dale Brungardt, USD 327 superintendent.

Flags fly high for Bearcat spirit

Craig Gustin has heard only good things since the black and red flags of the Ellsworth High School Bearcats were attached to downtown light poles more than a week ago.

“The reaction has been amazing,” he said. “The night they went up, I heard the football team commented on how sharp they looked.”

Wilson’s Wilma Olds was awarded the grand prize in the wheat bread sculpture competition at the Kansas State Fair. Her entry was a basket, woven and shaped over a roaster pan. It held colorful buds, butterflies and vines, as well as a tiny card made from dough and royal icing reading, “Find Your Fun.” Olds has other grand prize ribbons to her credit.

Councilman raises issue of current city codes

A recent meeting of the City Council in tiny Peabody attracted residents wanting to voice their opinions about the possibility of a proposed online business that makes referrals to independent contractors providing escort services using the town as its headquarters.

Peabody council member Jay Gfeller said the town’s zoning regulations regarding public health and safety were vague, according to a story in the Newton Kansan.

Wilson, H&B bring fiber optics to city areas

Businesses and residents in northeast Ellsworth should have the choice of another internet provider by the end of the year.

Wilson Communications has started construction of a fiber optics line north of Ellsworth on Kansas Highway 14 from an existing line that services the company’s territory from Wilson to Brookville, general manager Brian Boisvert said.
