911 service has been restored

Update 10 p.m.: 911 service has been restored.

 

According to the Ellsworth Police Chief, Ellsworth County Communications 911 is down and it will not ring through. This is a multiple county issue due to a cut AT&T fiber line.

So please call (785) 472-4416 to report any emergency and non-emergency until further notice.

Once again, the slower animal with the shell beat the speedfreak.

Following votes cast this past week by Ellsworth elementary and Kanopolis middle school students, members of Ellsworth’s Splash Pad committee determined that some features of the proposed water attraction were clear favorites.

Consultant outlines jail options

At the start of his recent presentation to the Ellsworth County Commission, architect Larry Goldberg cast doubt on the economic prospects of renovating the county jail.

“I can tell you that as a specialist in one of the most demanding building types there are, the opportunities to renovate existing jails happen fairly seldom,” he said.

Police may have lead on local robbery

The Ellsworth Police Department may be a step closer to identifying the person who robbed Seitz Drug just over a month ago, Monday, Dec. 18.

Chief Emil Halfhill said video footage has provided clues about the suspect’s method of travel.

“We believe we’ve identified a vehicle,” he said.

Vandals target tire lug nuts

The Ellsworth Police Department is investigating reports of malicious vehicle tampering, after becoming aware of new incidents on Sunday, Jan. 21.

The department was already aware of reports from three weeks ago about vehicles’ lug nuts being loosened. Police chief Emil Halfhill said the fourth reported incident caused him to suspect all were related.

Marquette Senior Center still going strong

The Marquette Senior Center, in downtown Marquette, is a busy place most weekdays, with visitors coming in for breakfast, getting help with health care, and even to shoot a game of pool. After 40 years in existence, the center is still going strong serving Marquette residents.

Helping to organize all that is happening is the center’s new director, Rita Brown of Marquette. Rita began her job as director in December.

Pharmacy students tour Ellsworth

If enough circles are drawn near each other, eventually some of them will overlap. Drop a finger onto the page and chances are good it’ll land within several circles at once. That’s where Savanna Anschutz wants to be — in the middle of it all and the go-between.

Anschutz and 15 of her fellow graduate students, from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Kansas, recently visited Ellsworth to learn about business management and customer relations. It was a homecoming for Anschutz, once or twice removed.

Temperature roller coaster frustrates county residents

With the past four weeks feeling more like a yo-yo than a legitimate season, many people are trying to make sense of winter. Within the last several days, temperatures in the mid-60s dropped to single digits, repeating the trend at Christmas and then the New Year. The mercury’s sudden snaps, after a short time of stringing everyone along, make it difficult to settle into any kind of routine.

“We all talked about how warm the fall was,” said state Rep. Steven Johnson. His district covers Ellsworth and parts of Rice and Saline counties. “These are bigger swings than we’re used to. Usually the temperature will stay somewhere for longer.”

Josh Svaty Democrat leader in donations

Ellsworth County Democrat Josh Svaty collected more donations in his quest to be the next Kansas governor than others in his party during the campaign reporting period that ended Dec. 31.

Svaty, a former state lawmaker and Kansas secretary of agriculture, reported donations of $192,545 from 598 individual contributors.
