Cover your mouth

BY LINDA MOWERY-DENNING
Ellsworth County I-R

Does it seem as if everyone around you is coughing, sneezing or otherwise feeling punk?

It’s probably going to get worse before it gets better.

This is flu season and, according to the Centers for Disease Control, recorded cases of flu-like symptoms are on track to be higher than in 2017 in Kansas.

City council meeting not a ‘cat-astrophe’

By Judi Brown
Marquette Tribune

The meeting room at Marquette City Hall was overflowing Tuesday night, Jan. 9, as the subject of cats and what to do (and not do) about their presence in Marquette was on the agenda.

Around 25 members of the public joined the fivemember council and other city officials, many to voice their concerns over the December passage of an item that would allow citizens to borrow a live trap from the city to capture cats and relocate them on farms outside the city limits.

Dog program is all about caring

By Vince Hancock
Ellsworth County I-R

Many types of canines are specifically trained to help humans. There are bomb-sniffing dogs, K-9 units and sheep dogs. There are sled dogs. There are official Seeing Eye dogs and other kinds of guide dogs. And there are the legendary St. Bernards that deliver brandy to stranded mountain travelers. All told, for dogs, there are about 101 vocations.

One of them, the comfort dog, doesn’t exist yet in Kansas, but Ellsworth’s Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Good Samaritan Society Ellsworth Village have teamed up to bring the first one to the state.

Residents seek to avoid repeat of March 6 wildfire

By Vince Hancock
Ellsworth County I-R

DORRANCE — The Dorrance Fire Department will gladly accept help during emergencies, but it doesn’t want citizens to find themselves trapped in the process. That was one of the key points at a meeting Saturday outlining how a repeat of the March 6 fire at Wilson Lake could be avoided.

The meeting site, American Legion Post 334 in Dorrance, was announced as the official recuperation area. With ample room and facilities, it will be where relief is provided when multiple agencies need to respond to an incident. A copy of guidelines for site operations will remain there and will include authorization for supplies at Wilson and Russell.

Thoughts of fire prevention spark talk

By Vince Hancock
Ellsworth County I-R

DORRANCE — From the way she bounds across the grass, Tye doesn’t act like she was ever injured. But only 10 months ago, Andy Phelps’ dog wore bandages on her paws after managing to escape the Wilson Lake fire. Her mother, five horses and Phelps’ home did not survive.

Tye’s fur has grown back and the scars blend in with the colors in her coat. As she comes up on her fifth birthday this April, she has a new playmate. T-Bone joined the family as a puppy, immediately after the fire, and is being taught how to be a proper blue heeler. The two of them recently attempted to harmonize with the music playing over the Douglas Street speakers during a trip to Ellsworth.

Footage is being reviewed and the KBI is helping. Ellsworth Police Chief Emil Halfhill updated City Council Dec. 26 on his progress with the Seitz Drug robbery investigation.

Attorneys celebrate 40+40

By Vince Hancock
Ellsworth County I-R

One could argue that two Ellsworth attorneys are marking 40 years of practice, but it’s hard to make the charges stick.

John Sherman, partner at Sherman, Hoffman & Hipp, LC has been at the firm for 40 years, but has been licensed for 41 years. Roger Peterson, partner at Peterson & Kasper, LLC has also practiced for 41 years but states that he doesn’t keep track of the passage of time—and he certainly isn’t celebrating a professional milestone.
