At first, there was no sign of music in the Krupp family vehicle. Diane, at the wheel and John, in the front passenger seat, murmured to each other about the houses they passed. Most were now empty but one had lights on — an automated security device or were people living there? They weren’t sure. Their son, Kurt, rode along quietly in the back seat. Suddenly the car shuddered as it encountered ruts on the gravel road. The jingle of bells issued from somewhere in the dark.
The Krupps soon joined others at Eugene Macek’s house, on the south side of the Smoky Hill River. Together, the assembled group became the Black Wolf Carolers, which marked 30 years of caroling this December. Weather has only cancelled their outings once, said Diane.
