Foundation offers matching grants in November

Ellsworth County has a chance to bring $75,000 into the community, during a challenge period that takes place exclusively this month.

Until Thursday, Nov. 30, donations made to the Community Grant Fund of the Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation (SHCF) will be matched by another Kansas foundation helping the northwest portion of the state.

Hopkins wins race for Kanopolis mayor

Kanopolis will have a new mayor following Tuesday’s election of city council and school board members.

Newcomer Anthony Hopkins defeated Darrell Ploutz, who has served on the Kanopolis City Council for a dozen years, for the office now held by Russell Bunch, who did not seek re-election. The vote was 87 to 66.

Ploutz, who watched the outcome at the Ellsworth County Courthouse, congratulated Hopkins on his win.

Haunted Hike a good time for one and all

The Marquette Lions Club presented the 2nd Annual Haunted Hike Saturday, Oct. 28 at the Wolverine Sports Complex.

Lions Club members counted 159 people who dare to take the hike that generated a lot of screams and laughter. At the end, friendly witches handed out candy to the brave survivors.

Holyrood’s water pad ready for good times

The splash pad in Holyrood’s City Park is complete and ready to go. But with warm weather finally giving way to chilly winds and nightly lows dipping below freezing, local kids will have to wait until next spring before they can splash and play.

The splash pad’s completion signifies the end of an effort by volunteers, residents and donors to further enhance the park and their hometown. In about a year’s time, the community worked together to raise enough money to pay for the entire project — which was the third phase of park improvements.

As Josh Svaty traveled across Kansas this summer, one issue continued to surface in county after county — KanCare, the state’s privatized version of Medicaid, isn’t working for consumers or providers.

KanCare wasn’t a program Svaty expected to have on his priority list as a candidate for governor. But after hearing “story after story it wasn’t working,” the Ellsworth Democrat became determined to fix the program that offers health care to — among others — children and adults with disabilities.

Time to shop until you drop

It’s fall. The air is crisp, the leaves are beginning to change color and, if you listen closely, you can almost hear the jingle bells — and the bargains — fast approaching.

The annual Ellsworth County Medical Center Auxiliary’s Jingle Bell Shop & Sell takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at the ECMC administrative building in Ellsworth.

Legion eyes community center

The first step in what could be a long process aimed at building a new community center/American Legion hall in Ellsworth was taken Oct. 26.

On a vote of 32-to-1, members of the Ellsworth American Legion authorized a committee of members of the Ellsworth Sons of the American Legion Squadron 174 to proceed with the planning, fundraising and other details needed to make the new building a reality.

Gold star flags offer unique history

Ellsworth County I-RThe folded American flags — 185 in all — rest side by side in wood and glass cases inside Ellsworth’s American Legion building. Another 24 flags are on display from Kanopolis.

Each one of these flags represent a fallen soldier who came home to Ellsworth County with the red, white and blue symbol of America draped over his coffin.
