Get ready for a rip roarin’ time

On Aug. 19, Dave “Zerf ” Zerfas plans to stand under the cottonwood tree on Cowtown Plaza and perform the song, “Nauchville Hand,” he wrote about Ellsworth.

Zerf, a singer, song writer and western historian, plans two versions of the song — the original and another performed by his old group, Plastique, which Zerf has revived for Ellsworth’s 150th birthday celebration.

Smoky Valley Saddle Club Rodeo rules the night

Cooler than average weather made attendance comfortable for both nights of the Smoky Valley Saddle Club Rodeo in Marquette Friday and Saturday, Aug. 4 and 5.

In Saturday’s bareback riding event with four cowboys competing, Colt Eck won with a score of 74. Chandler Ladner took second place with a score of 68.

Concert set for festival

The Diamond W Wranglers will perform Saturday, Aug. 19, as part of Ellsworth’s 150th anniversary bash.

The group, which specializes in classic western music, is sponsored by the National Drovers Hall of Fame.

Fly in set for Saturday

Between 30 and 50 airplanes are expected Saturday at the Ellsworth Municipal Airport for the 26th annual Cow Town Fly-In.

“It is all dependent on the weather,” said Dale Weinhold, an event organizer. “If it is a nice day, we will see a big crowd. If not, we could have nothing.

Marshall thinks it’s time start all over with Medicaid

First District Congressman Roger Marshall, R-Great Bend, is no fan of Medicaid, the federal-state partnership that assists low-income families or individuals in paying for long-term medical and custodial care costs.

“Medicaid is so broken we need to blow it up and start over,” Marshall said Saturday.

Moran wants to see all stakeholders at the table

Sen. Jerry Moran described the tightrope he walks with federal health care policy during a coffee and kolaches session Saturday morning at the Wilson After Harvest Czech Festival.

Moran, a Republican who has endorsed attempts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, said legislation is needed that will control costs, provide access and yet still care for those with pre-existing conditions.

Kids’ fishing derby fun for all despite heat

The Marquette Recreation Department and the Marquette Fire/EMS Departments hosted a kids fishing derby from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 22, at Eisenhower Park Pond in Marquette. Even though the heat was excessive, there were 26 kids participating. A hotdog lunch was served at noon when the derby ended.

Winner for the 0-6 year-old category with the most fish caught was Lucas Alton with six fish. The biggest fish was caught by Rylee Larson. Her trophy fish was 11-inches long.

Kanopolis primary results.

Kanopolis primary results are as follows:

First place Anthony Hopkins with 47 votes, second place Darrell Ploutz with 37 votes, third place Rory Tillett with 15 votes, and Nola Newcomer in fourth with 8 votes. The I-R wants to thank all the canidates and congradulations to the top two Anthony Hopkins and Darell Ploutz for making it to the general election that will be held November 7. There was a total of 118 voters out of 377 registered voters in the city if Kanopolis or 31% turn out. Two of the ballots are previsional and may or may not count towards the overall total.

A Wichita Binge

The Wichita City Eagle of Thursday, July 27, 1876, noted that on the previous Monday two companies of soldiers passed through town on their way north. The passing of troops through Wichita was nothing unusual. With Indian Territory on the southern Kansas border movement of troops to and from posts was relatively commonplace.

This time troop movement brought more than the usual keen interest. Only two weeks earlier the City Eagle noted that “The death of General Custer will create a profound sensation throughout the whole country, and especially in Kansas where he saw several years (of ) service and formed many acquaintances.”
