When Kenny and Deb Castor leave the horse-drawn carriage that will carry them down Douglas Avenue Saturday and step onto the review stand at Cowtown Days, Kenny will go from being the parade’s grand marshal to the job he has performed for decades — being the Voice of Ellsworth.

“I’m just honored and humbled to be grand marshal. It just blows me away,” Castor said.

“But this isn’t about me. It’s about Ellsworth’s 150th birthday.”

Happy Birthday, Ellsworth

By Linda Mowery-Denning
Ellsworth County I-R

Ellsworth reached its peak as a Kansas cattletown in 1873. That year — six years after being laid out — the town saw about 220,000 cattle pass through on the way to slaughterhouses. The boom brought dollars to the area — much of it revenue from the operation of saloons, gambling houses and brothels.

It wasn’t an accident Ellsworth came to be known as the “Wickedest Cattletown in Kansas.”

Starting today (Thursday), Ellsworth celebrates that past and the 150 years of progress since with four days of activities.

The roots of the motion go back to 2015, when the council authorized Karst Water Well Drilling Services to help identify water sources that could be developed into a well field for future production. Twenty-nine different sites were identified and test holes drilled by Karst.

Taco Tuesdays and chili dogs at the Sugar Shack are the talk of the town as summer gets into full swing. New owner Mary Jo Jundt also reports small-town life so far is everything she expected it to be and tells the I-R that changes are coming.

The plans for the store are to bring more items to the menu and even going a step further and opening up in the winter months with seasonal food items. Right now the Sugar Shack is open from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed Sunday.

By Mark Gardner

After the votes were officially tallied Monday morning, there were 119 votes but commissioners kicked out 10 of them, putting voter turnout for the mayor’s primary in Kanopolis at 32 percent.

Ellsworth County clerk Shelly Vopat said the votes were tossed because one was blank and the other nine had two candidates marked on a single ballot.
