Judge Ron Svaty to retire Oct. 1

TOPEKA — District Judge Ron Svaty, who has served in Ellsworth County in the 20th Judicial District since 2004, will retire Oct. 1.

Svaty has spent all but his first year out of law school working in Ellsworth. He clerked for one year for the Alaska Supreme Court following graduation from Stanford University School of Law in 1967.

Kueser among teacher finalists

Ellsworth Elementary School third grade teacher Sarah Kueser can now cross off a goal that perhaps can be found on any elementary or secondary school teacher’s career bucket list.

The Ellsworth native is a semi-finalist for Kansas Teacher of the Year — one of the top 12 elementary teachers in Kansas — and one of the top 24 of teachers in Kansas. Not bad when you consider there are over 40,000 teachers in the Sunflower State.

Stamp of Approval

Members of the Ellsworth- Kanopolis-Geneseo USD 327 board of education approved the 2017-18 negotiated agreement with the district’s teachers Aug. 23.

Superintendent Dale Brungardt said special emphasis during the negotiation was given to teacher attraction and retention.

Marquette makes itself known at the fair

Members of the Marquette Chamber of Commerce and staff and volunteers at the Kansas Motorcycle Museum have worked hard over the past year to make this year’s booth in the Pride of Kansas building at the Kansas State Fair happen.

The booth was ready to open Friday morning, Sept. 8, when the fair kicked off and will be available throughout the fair until its close Sunday night, Sept. 17.

The snake and other early-day stories

David Bailey has several histories written by members of his family. In 1958, Lillian Bailey wrote what she labeled as “family notes.” Here is a story from her memories of early-day Ellsworth County:

“When Edith came along, Doctor Bush, who was just a young fellow starting out, did not handle the case right and we almost lost both Mother and baby. The doctor years afterward, said he was at fault.

David Bailey never tires of hearing the stories his father, Keith, tells about growing up in Ellsworth County.

Nor does he tire of hearing the stories Keith’s family passed down to him through several generations that date back to soon after the Civil War.

Calf run-in injures area farmer

Ellsworth County farmer Bob Nienke was at home Tuesday and recovering from a run-in with a calf that left him hospitalized for 10 days.

Julie Nienke said her husband returned home Monday; however, he still has obstacles to face.

Clinic plans ‘On the Road’ outreach push

Tina Davis, director of the rural health clinics for Ellsworth County Medical Center, introduced a community outreach plan at the Aug. 23 meeting of the hospital board of directors.

The plan centers around the hospital’s mission and vision statements.

Buffingtons celebrate 33 years in business

As of July 14, Max and Kay Buffington have been taking care of Marquette’s hardware needs for 33 years. For Max, the Buffington’s store was an extension of his hardware store experience that began when he was still in high school.

In his senior year at Marquette High School in 1963, Max finished the basketball season with his team before taking a job in McPherson at CM&S Building Center.

Area resident Anita Lamont already is making plans for the next trip she plans to take with her son to see a solar eclipse.

The year will be 2024 and her son, Kason, will be a senior in high school.

Kason, a sixth grader at Kanopolis Middle School, accompanied his mother to Nebraska, where they watched the Aug. 21 solar eclipse in its totality.
