By LINDA MOWERY-DENNING

The first time Katherine Kolodziejczyk visited Kansas was this past December when she interviewed to be pastor at Marquette’s Elim Lutheran Church.

She was impressed by the experience.

“I loved it here in Marquette,” she said. “The people here are just so friendly and loving and open.”

“I feel real good,” county commissioner Kermit Rush said. “I was concerned about it because if it didn’t pass, we would probably end up raising the mill levy.

Rapidly moving fire threatens Wilson

By Mark Gardner

Exhausted volunteer firefighters from Wilson and Ellsworth donned their gear again Tuesday morning to extinguish hot spots and flares from a grass fire that started at Wilson Lake and jumped Interstate 70 before it was brought under control.

Ellsworth County remained under an extreme grassland fire warning Tuesday; however, the extended forecast contained a hint of relief. Wichita metrologist Ross Janssen had rain in his forecast for late Friday and early Saturday. Central Kansas has gone weeks without significant moisture.

Salute to the Past

By the I-R staff

Ellsworth kicked off its 150th birthday celebration Saturday night with a tribune to the men and women who battled drought, floods and prairie fires to settle this part of Kansas.

About 150 attended the Old Settlers Reunion at Ellsworth City Hall. The event, which organizers hope becomes an annual ritual, was sponsored by the National Drovers Hall of Fame, which is working to restore downtown Ellsworth’s signature Insurance Building.

Ellsworth County’s mold problem may be closer to resolution as Sheriff Murray Marston appeared at Monday’s commission meeting with a contract proposal for cleanup.

Marston said there have been changes in the original bid from the Topeka company, H.I.S. Companies LLC, the county has hired as more was known about the scope of the job.

The biggest change is price.

Kansas Supreme Court rules against state in school funding case

TOPEKA— The Kansas Supreme Court today issued a unanimous decision in Gannon v. State, holding that the Kansas K-12 public education financing system does not meet the adequacy requirements of the people's constitution. The court stayed the enforcement of its decision until June 30, 2017, to give the state Legislature time to respond.

If by June 30 the state has not satisfactorily demonstrated to the Supreme Court that any K-12 public education financing system the Legislature enacts is capable of meeting the adequacy   requirements of the constitution, then a lifting of the stay will mean that Kansas will be without a legally valid system.
