Dale C. Shively (1934-2017)

Dale C. Shively, 82, passed away Sunday, July 2, 2017 in Ellsworth. He was born Sept. 27, 1934 in Ellsworth to Henry Clint and Gertrude Mary (Straley) Shively.

Dale was a lifetime resident of Ellsworth County where he worked as a driller in the oilfield and operated a custom harvesting business. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of the Geneseo American Legion Post 241.

Dale married Dolores Rae Wright in Ellsworth on Nov. 22, 1961. She preceded him in death.

Dale is survived by his son, Jeff Freeman and wife JoEllen of Kanopolis; daughter, Fonda Rush and husband Jerry of Geneseo; son, Les Shively of Kanopolis; grandchildren, Evan Shively, Jenny and Clint Freeman, and Brian and Justin Rush; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sisters, Nathlie Baker, Marjorie Splitter, and Marie Hoss; and brothers, Donald and Wayne.

Helen M. (Jezek) Hayes (1916-2017)

Helen M. (Jezek) Hayes, 100, died June 29, 2017 at Lawrence. She was formally of Holyrood.

Helen was born Nov. 16, 1916 Palacky Township to Charles and Fanny (Benysek) Jezek Sr.

She was a 1934 graduate of Holyrood Rural High School. She completed cosmetology school.

On Jan. 15, 1946 she married Marty M. Hayes who died Jan. 4, 1971.

Helen is survived by daughter M. Susan (Hrabe) Keeler and Gary Bradford; grandson Kelly (Stacie) Zoey and Violet; nieces Emma Doherty, Evelyn Parker, Erlene Fox, Barbara Withrow, and Carol Heil; nephews Ernest D. Jezek Jr. and Samuel Joy; cousin Alan Jezek San Antonio, Texas.

She was proceeded in death by her parents; husband, Marty; son, Tom Hayes; grandson, Chris Hrabe; brothers, Joe (Christine), Ernest (Bernice), Charles (Elnita) Jezek; sisters, Rose (Marvin) Stratmann, and infant sister Evaline Jezek.

Cremation has taken place and there were no services. Burial in the Great Bend Cemetery.

Joshua 'Josh' Charles Monzel (1985-2017)

Joshua ‘Josh’ Charles Monzel, 33, of Aurora, Colo. passed away June 10, 2017 in Aurora. He was born Aug. 17, 1985 at Grand Junction, Colo. to Forrest Wishcop and Sandra Monzel.

He was preceded in death by his father; great-grandparents, Charles and Myrtle Edwards, Arthur and Helen Sundquist, Ann and Walter Dodge; great-uncles, Thomas Edwards and James Edwards; great-aunt, Mable Westerlund; and cousin, Michaela Kahle.

Drucilla R. Richard

     Drucilla R. Richard, 92, was called to her eternal home on Friday, June 30, 2017 in Ellsworth. She was born Oct. 23, 1924 in Lincoln County, Kan.
     Drucilla was a retired homemaker and farm wife. She was also actively involved in her church and community.
     Drucilla was preceded in death by her parents, Arnold and Alvina Arkebauer; brothers, Delbert and Ronald, and son-in-law, Vern Oestmann.
     She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Loren Richard; three children, Dru (Candy) Richard, Debby Oestmann, and Cindy (Jim) Lamia. She is also survived by eight grandsons, 11 great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law, Helen Mitchell.
     Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m., Sunday, July 2, at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Betty L. Lemons (1938-2017)

Betty L. Lemons, 79, of Lindsborg, formerly of Assaria, passed away Saturday, June 24, 2017. She was born Jan. 19, 1938 in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Paul and Christen (King) Huggins. She married Thomas E. Lemons in 1957, he preceded her death on Dec. 16, 2016.

She is also preceded in death by her brothers, David Sprowl and Robert Huggins (Shirley); sisters, Violet Sprowl, Alice Brovenec (Bill) and Clara Clark (Dale).

Betty is survived by her sons, Rick Lemons, of Salina, Perry Lemons (Julie), of Assaria and Tom Lemons, of Wichita; one grandson, Colby Lemons (Brittany), of Salina; and two great- grandchildren, Rylee and Reagan Lemons, both of Salina; brothers, Lewis Sprowl (Bonnie) and Tom Huggins (Cheryl); and sisters, Edith Sprowl and Diane McCoy (Don).

A visitation for Betty and Tom will be held from 4-8 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m., Friday, June 30 at Ryan Mortuary 137, N. 8th St., Salina.

Ralph 'Jimmie' Miles (1937-2017)

Ralph “Jimmie” Miles, Oklahoma City, Okla., passed away June 15, 2017.  Jimmie was born in Feb. 21, 1937 in Wilson, Kan. to Raymond and Mabel (Black) Miles.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Karen, in 2016; sister, Mary Ann; and brother, Gene.

He is survived by his five children, Bret Miles and wife June, Terry Miles, Trent Miles and wife Carla, Brad Miles and wife Lisa, and daughter, Trudy Hubbard and husband Mike. He was a grandfather to 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 1-8 p.m. Monday, June 19 with family present to greet guests from 7-8 p.m. at Buchanan Funeral Service, Oklahoma City.

Services to celebrate his life will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 20 in the chapel of Buchanan Funeral Service with burial to follow at the Resurrection Memorial Cemetery.

Edward Kyler 'Ted' Vopat

     Larger than life: there is perhaps no better way to describe Edward Kyler Vopat, 36, of Wichita, Kan., known to most as Ted, Teddy, Tedward, and many other names. Ted died Saturday, June 17, 2017 following a courageous bout with cancer. Ted was born Oct. 4, 1980, in Wichita. He graduated in 1999 from Bishop Carroll Catholic High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2004 from Bethany College.
     He married Ashley Martin on
Nov. 3, 2012. The couple has two daughters, Gracie and Bella and oneson, Kyler “Kiki”, who were Ted’s greatest sources of pride and joy.

Blanche M. Bartlett

     Blanche M. Bartlett, 96, Horseheads, N.Y., died Sunday May 28, 2017. Blanche was born Aug. 3, 1920, in Ellsworth, Kan. to the late Frank and Lillian (Zeman) Prochaska. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Elmira, N.Y.
     Blanche was predeceased by her loving husband, Dr. George Bartlett, and sister, Eileen Cox.
     She is survived by daughters and sons-in-laws, Gail Bartlett and Gentry Wooldridge of Horseheads, N.Y., and Lisa and Scotty Mathis of Brevard, N.C.; sons and daughter-in-law, Henry Scott Bartlett of Jasper, Ga., and Bruce and Chris Bartlett of Syracuse, N.Y.; sister, Dorothy Smith of Pasco, Wash.; half-sister, Jolene Schultz and husband, Jr., of Kanopolis, Kan.; and half-brother, Roger Prochaska and wife, Jan, of Ellsworth; four grandchildren, Michael, Kathryn and Hannah Mathis and Cici Bartlett.

Catherine Frances Zorn (1920-2017)

Catherine Frances Zorn, 96, passed away June 11, 2017.
She was born Dec. 2, 1920, in Ellsworth, to Frank and Lena (Shusky) Zorn. Catherine was a lifetime resident of Ellsworth. She worked in the laundry department at the Good Samaritan Society in Ellsworth for 33 years. She was also a member of the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and Altar Society in Ellsworth.
Catherine is survived by her daughter, Diane McKinney (Butch) of Ellsworth; son, Gary Zorn of Ellinwood; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth, with family present from 6-7 p.m. and a rosary/vigil service at 7 p.m.
The funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 15, at the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Ellsworth, with burial following in the Ellsworth Cemetery.

Craig Lynn Kohls (1953-2017)

 

Craig Lynn Kohls, 64, of Manhattan, Kan., died Sunday June 4, 2017 in McPherson, Kan.  He was born May 5, 1953 in Ellsworth, Kan., the son of Alvin and Lois (Traugott) Kohls.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                He grew up in Ellsworth and graduated from Ellsworth High School with the class of 1971. He attended Bethany College in Lindsborg and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
